Dr. Gail Darling helped bring the 17th World Congress of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus to Toronto, bringing together specialists across disciplines to advance discussion and research in esophageal disease. She also saw the congress as an opportunity to introduce international colleagues to a diverse city that reflects the world.

The Story

Dr. Gail Darling wanted to bring the World Congress of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus to Toronto both for what the conference could contribute to her field and for what the city could offer her international colleagues. Although focused on the specialized area of esophageal disease, the congress brings together multiple disciplines working across cancer, non-cancer conditions and diagnosis.

For Dr. Darling, that mix created an important opportunity for collaborative discussion and research. She was equally enthusiastic about showcasing Toronto to her colleagues and friends. She saw the city’s diversity, with people and food from around the world, as a reflection of the international community attending the congress and wanted delegates to have the opportunity to experience it for themselves.
