Prof. Kostas Plataniotis helped bring the 2021 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing to Toronto, 30 years after the conference was first held in the city. He saw its return as an opportunity to showcase Toronto and the University of Toronto’s longstanding contributions to signal processing to an international audience.

The Story

Prof. Kostas Plataniotis wanted to bring the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing back to Toronto in 2021 for a significant reason. It marked 30 years since the conference had first been held in Toronto in 1991. With the University of Toronto among the early institutions to establish a functioning signal processing program, he saw the conference as a global platform to tell the city and university’s story.

Plataniotis also believed Toronto itself would appeal to international delegates and their families, pointing to the city’s multicultural character as part of the draw. Reflecting on the organization supporting the conference, he expressed his thanks for both the invitation and support and encouraged others considering becoming involved, describing it as “a worthy cause.”
